Spirit of Prophecy

The Scriptures testify that one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit is prophecy.
Prophecy is a part of God’s revelation to man.
  • It is included in that Scripture which is profitable for instruction. (2 Timothy 3:16-17 - All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.)
  • It is designed for us and our children to know. (Deuteronomy 29:29 - The secret things belong unto the LORD our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law)
  • So far from being enshrouded in impenetrable mystery, it is that which especially constitutes the word of God as a lamp to our feet and a light to our path. (Psalm 119:105 - Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path; 2 Peter 1:19 - We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts.)
  • A blessing is pronounced upon those who study it. (Revelation 1:1,3 - The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to shew unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass; and he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John...Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand.)
Prophecy is to be understood by the people of God sufficiently to show them their position in the world’s history and the special duties required in their time and by their hands.
The Spirit of God was promised to manifest itself in the church through certain gifts (enumerated especially in 1 Corinthians 12 and Ephesians 4). These gifts are not designed to supersede, or take the place of, the Bible, which is sufficient to make us wise unto salvation, any more than the Bible can take the place of the Spirit of God.
In specifying the various channels of its operations, the Spirit of God has simply made provision for its own existence and presence with the people of God to the end of time to lead to an understanding of that word which it had inspired, to both convince of sin and to work a transformation in the heart and life.
Those who deny to the Spirit its place and operation, do plainly deny that part of the Bible which assigns to the Spirit of God this special work of prophecy and to its application in times of need.
The spiritual gift of prophecy is an identifying mark of the remnant church in the last days, and we believe it was manifested in the ministry of Ellen G. White. Her writings speak with prophetic authority and provide comfort, guidance, instruction, and correction to the followers of Christ. Her writings also make clear that the Bible is the standard by which all teaching and experience must be tested (proven).
The world’s history from specified dates in the past, the rise and fall of empires, and the chronological succession of events down to the setting up of God’s everlasting kingdom, are outlined in numerous great chains of prophecy, which have now all been fulfilled except the closing scenes.

Numbers 12:6 - And he said, Hear now my words: If there be a prophet among you, I the LORD will make myself known unto him in a vision, and will speak unto him in a dream.
2 Chronicles 20:20 - And they rose early in the morning, and went forth into the wilderness of Tekoa: and as they went forth, Jehoshaphat stood and said, Hear me, O Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem; Believe in the LORD your God, so shall ye be established; believe his prophets, so shall ye prosper.
Amos 3:7 - Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets.
Joel 2:28-29 - And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my Spirit.
Acts 2:16-21 - But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel; 17 And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: 18 And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy: 19 And I will shew wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke: 20 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great and notable day of the Lord come: 21 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.
Hebrews 1:1 - God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,
Revelation 12:17 - And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ (spirit of prophecy).
Revelation 19:10 - And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellow-servant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.
Revelation 22:9 - Then saith he unto me, See thou do it not: for I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren the prophets, and of them which keep the sayings of this book: worship God.
